About the Classes
We get you moving, we start with footwork warm-ups any good swing dancer would be envious of. You will learn across the floor drills to help you understand timing and rhythm, we go over the connection with a partner. If you’ve never danced before, our classes are the perfect place to start! We take you through a simple but fun dance routine that will get your body moving and completely energise you. Both classes are based on West Coast Swing the dance that gives goosebumps on the back of the neck.
During the course of both swing lessons, we will work on your 4, 6 and 8 count patterns, footwork, framework, and variations. We will help you understand musicality, and how to structure music into the dance and most importantly how to enjoy dancing with your partner to share in the experience of playtime.
A typical ShaneKeriDance West Coast Swing dance night is as much about socialising and having fun, as is it is about learning to dance along with keeping fit and healthy! It’s much more than just a dance lesson, it’s a top night out!
West Coast Swing
What is this dance everyone is excited about, called west coast swing? West Coast Swing is a very popular form of swing dancing that has spread around the world simply its a A Swing dance that defies the odds and stays very progressive. A modern style of Swing dance known as the dancer’s dance, fun interaction between both partners, the follower has as much fun as the leader when dancing. Although it’s roots originally come from the lindy hop, the big appeal of WCS (west coast swing) is how progressive it is and how very adaptable it is to most music genres, a swing dance that allows variety and plays on the fly, and it can be danced to almost any of the musical styles!
Modern Swing / West Coast Swing is a classic dance that is entertaining, fun, and versatile. There are many variations of Swing dancing styles and some include: Lindy Hop, Jive, East Coast Swing, Jitterbug and Charleston Rock n Roll all which make up our modern west coast swing.
WCS creates room for improvisation and interaction between both partners, a dance that has characteristics of street dance and modern dance, so easy to love and become addicted to!
Basic Characteristics of West Coast Swing:
- WCS is a lead-follow partner dance that highlight the conversation between both partners and the music, the leader makes a suggestion for the patterns and direction of the dance while creating opportunities for the follower to embellish and shine within the movement of the dance. The follower carries out the intention of the leader, but is encouraged to play and interpret the music within the leader’s overall suggestions.
- WCS is generally danced in a linear slot, with the follower moving to either end of the slot and the leader remaining in the centre. Although the slot can rotate, move laterally or travel on occasion, WCS is not circular or progressive.
- Every basic pattern in WCS ends in opposition known as an anchor; where the leader and follower stretch away at the end of the slot. This stretch or elasticity, creates a very smooth movement, a relaxed gliding look while dancing across the floor.
- Why does everyone love WCS?
One of the best parts about west coast swing is that the dance is highly personalised to a dancer’s individual style. That’s why dancers are encouraged to develop their own style within the basic framework of the dance, while working on the freedom to express and show individuality!
It doesn’t get any better than this when it comes to dancing. It’s the most popular, exciting and fun, exhilarating fastest growing dance across the globe, and there is a reason why? A musical, stylish, interactive & progressive modern Swing dance has evolved through the ages of music from the 1930s to current times expanding its style and flavour to be more modern and lyrical dance, keeping up with the trends of music through the current more contemporary style Top 40’s Pop, Hip hop, Blues or any 4/4 time music.
You, like everyone else, will fall in love with the dance.
